Uses

Topical urea is indicated for the treatment of hyperkeratotic skin conditions including dry rough skin, psoriasis, eczema, ichthyosis, keratosis, xerosis, and for debridement of necrotic or hyperkeratotic tissue to promote healing. It is also used to treat thickened, damaged, or ingrown nails.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to urea or any component of the formulation. Avoid use on acutely inflamed, infected, or broken skin.

Side effects

May cause transient stinging, burning, itching, or irritation upon application, which typically resolves with continued use or upon discontinuation. Persistent reactions are uncommon.

Warnings

For topical use only. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. Keep out of reach of children. Store at controlled room temperature.

How it works

Urea gently dissolves the intercellular matrix of the stratum corneum, causing loosening and shedding of the hyperkeratotic layer. This keratolytic action softens and rehydrates the skin. At higher concentrations, urea also has proteolytic and mild antimicrobial properties.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F). Do not freeze. Keep container tightly closed.
