Uses

Indicated for short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of active duodenal ulcer and for maintenance therapy at reduced dosage to prevent duodenal ulcer recurrence after healing.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any of its excipients. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment as aluminum accumulation may occur.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated. The most frequent complaint is constipation (approximately 2%). Other infrequent adverse effects include nausea, gastric discomfort, dry mouth, rash, and pruritus.

Warnings

Antacids should not be taken within 30 minutes before or after sucralfate, as they may interfere with its binding. May reduce absorption of some drugs (fluoroquinolones, digoxin, phenytoin, tetracyclines) taken concurrently; administer these at least 2 hours apart. Use with caution in patients with chronic renal failure due to aluminum toxicity risk.

How it works

Sucralfate is only minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It exerts a local protective effect by forming a viscous paste that adheres to the ulcer crater, creating a barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile salts. It also stimulates prostaglandin synthesis and bicarbonate secretion.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature. Keep away from moisture and excessive heat.
