Uses
Used in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia and other leukemias. It may also be used for prevention and treatment of meningeal leukemia.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cytarabine.
Side effects
Common effects include bone marrow suppression, anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, nausea, vomiting, and fever.
Warnings
Should only be used under specialist oncology supervision. Severe bone marrow suppression and serious infections may occur.
How it works
Cytarabine is an antimetabolite that inhibits DNA synthesis, primarily affecting rapidly dividing cells during the S phase of the cell cycle.
