Uses
Used as an antacid and alginate-based reflux barrier. Sodium alginate forms a viscous raft on the stomach contents to reduce gastroesophageal reflux, while potassium bicarbonate neutralizes gastric acid.
Do not use if
Use with caution in patients with hyperkalemia or severe renal insufficiency due to the potassium content. Not recommended in patients on a strict low-potassium diet.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause mild bloating, flatulence, or constipation. High doses may contribute to electrolyte imbalance in patients with renal impairment.
Warnings
Patients with renal disease or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics or ACE inhibitors should be monitored for hyperkalemia. Use with caution in patients with bowel obstruction.
How it works
Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a gel-like raft that floats on the stomach contents and mechanically blocks reflux. Potassium bicarbonate acts as an antacid to buffer gastric pH.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C, away from moisture. Keep bottle tightly closed after use.
