Uses
This topical combination is used as a soothing and protective barrier cream, primarily for managing diaper rash and other mild skin irritations in infants and adults. Zinc oxide provides a protective barrier, while lanolin moisturizes and the benzyl derivatives have mild antiseptic properties.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component, including lanolin or benzyl compounds. Avoid application to deep wounds, severely infected skin, or mucous membranes.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Contact sensitization to lanolin or benzyl derivatives may occur in some individuals, presenting as allergic contact dermatitis. Benzyl alcohol in large systemic doses can cause toxicity in neonates (gasping syndrome), though topical products typically use it in low concentrations.
Warnings
Avoid contact with eyes. For external use only. If skin condition worsens or does not improve within 7 days, consult a healthcare professional. Keep out of reach of children.
How it works
Zinc oxide forms a physical barrier that protects skin from moisture and irritants and has mild astringent and antiseptic properties. Lanolin is an emollient that reduces transepidermal water loss. Benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, and benzyl cinnamate contribute mild antimicrobial and preservative effects.
Storage
Store below 25°C, away from direct heat and light. Keep the tube or container tightly closed.
