Uses

A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the relief of pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, muscle pain, and postoperative pain. Available as topical gel for localized musculoskeletal pain.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma, known NSAID hypersensitivity, active peptic ulcer disease, severe hepatic or renal impairment, and third trimester of pregnancy.

Side effects

Common systemic side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, and peptic ulceration. Topical use may cause local skin irritation or rash. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions may occur.

Warnings

Long-term systemic use is associated with cardiovascular, renal, and gastrointestinal risks. Avoid concomitant use with other NSAIDs or anticoagulants without medical supervision. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.

How it works

Loxoprofen is a propionic acid derivative NSAID and prodrug that is converted to its active trans-alcohol metabolite. It inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, reducing prostaglandin synthesis and thereby exerting analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects.
