Uses

Used as a nutritional supplement for antioxidant support. May benefit patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy by reducing oxidative stress. Also used to support metabolic health and cellular energy production.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to alpha lipoic acid. Use with caution in patients on thyroid medications or anticoagulants.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated at recommended doses. May cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Rarely, skin rash or allergic reactions may occur.

Warnings

Store at room temperature 15–30°C and avoid excessive heat and moisture. Patients with diabetes should monitor blood glucose closely as alpha lipoic acid may lower blood sugar levels.

How it works

Alpha lipoic acid is a naturally occurring dithiol compound that functions as a cofactor in mitochondrial energy metabolism. It acts as a potent antioxidant capable of neutralizing free radicals in both aqueous and lipid environments. It also regenerates other antioxidants including vitamins C and E and glutathione.
