Uses

The combination of eprosartan (an angiotensin II receptor blocker) and hydrochlorothiazide (a thiazide diuretic) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults when combination therapy is appropriate.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in anuric patients, severe renal impairment, severe hepatic impairment, known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or either component, pregnancy (second and third trimesters), and concomitant use with aliskiren in diabetic patients.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include dizziness, headache, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperuricemia, elevated serum creatinine, and photosensitivity. Angioedema is a rare but serious risk with ARBs.

Warnings

Monitor renal function, electrolytes (especially potassium), and blood pressure regularly. Avoid use in pregnancy due to fetal risk (renal dysfunction, oligohydramnios, skull hypoplasia). Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment or diabetes.

How it works

Eprosartan selectively blocks AT1 angiotensin II receptors, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide inhibits sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubule, reducing plasma volume and blood pressure. The combination provides additive antihypertensive effects.
