Uses

Indicated for the treatment of mixed bacterial and protozoal intestinal infections, including acute bacterial gastroenteritis, traveler's diarrhea, and infections where both gram-negative bacteria and anaerobes or protozoa (such as Giardia and Entamoeba) are involved.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to fluoroquinolones or nitroimidazoles. Avoid in pregnant women (especially first trimester), nursing mothers, children, and patients with a history of tendinopathy related to fluoroquinolones. Avoid concurrent alcohol use with tinidazole.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Tinidazole may cause a metallic taste and, rarely, peripheral neuropathy. Norfloxacin may cause tendinopathy and photosensitivity. CNS effects (dizziness, confusion) are possible.

Warnings

Risk of tendon rupture, particularly the Achilles tendon, especially in elderly patients and those on corticosteroids. Avoid excessive sun exposure. May exacerbate myasthenia gravis. Discontinue at first signs of tendinopathy or neurological symptoms.

How it works

Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication. Tinidazole is a nitroimidazole antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent that forms reactive intermediates damaging microbial DNA under anaerobic conditions.
