Uses
Used to prevent and treat vitamin D deficiency. Supports calcium absorption and bone mineralisation. May be indicated in osteoporosis, rickets, osteomalacia, and conditions associated with malabsorption.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypercalcaemia, hypervitaminosis D, and nephrolithiasis associated with hypercalciuria. Use with caution in renal impairment.
Side effects
At recommended doses, side effects are uncommon. Excessive intake may cause hypercalcaemia, presenting as nausea, vomiting, weakness, polyuria, and constipation.
Warnings
Monitor serum calcium in patients on long-term therapy or with renal impairment. Avoid concurrent use of other vitamin D preparations without medical supervision.
How it works
Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, then in the kidney to the active metabolite calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3). Calcitriol binds nuclear vitamin D receptors, promoting intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption and regulating bone metabolism. 10 mcg equals 400 IU.
