Uses

Combined oral contraceptive indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women of reproductive age. Also used in the management of dysmenorrhea and dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in smokers over 35 years, patients with history of thromboembolic disorders, stroke, liver disease, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, known or suspected breast or estrogen-dependent cancers, and during pregnancy.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, mood changes, and spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially in the first months of use. Rare but serious risks include venous thromboembolism.

Warnings

Cigarette smoking substantially increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events with combined oral contraceptives, particularly in women over 35. Monitor blood pressure regularly. Discontinue at least 4 weeks before elective surgery.

How it works

Ethynyl estradiol is a synthetic estrogen that suppresses the mid-cycle LH surge, preventing ovulation. Gestodene is a third-generation progestogen with high progestogenic and low androgenic activity that also contributes to inhibition of ovulation and alteration of the endometrium and cervical mucus.
