Uses

Carbomer (carbopol) ophthalmic gel is used as an ocular lubricant for the symptomatic relief of dry eye syndrome and ocular surface dryness, including conditions caused by reduced tear production or increased evaporation.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to carbomer or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated. Transient blurred vision immediately after instillation is common due to the gel formulation. Mild stinging or irritation may occur. Hypersensitivity reactions are rare.

Warnings

Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after instillation before inserting contact lenses. Avoid contaminating the tip of the container. Transient visual blurring may affect ability to drive.

How it works

Carbomer is a high-molecular-weight polymer that forms a viscous gel when applied to the ocular surface. It mimics the mucin layer of the tear film, stabilizing it and prolonging retention on the corneal surface to relieve dryness.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C). Discard within 4 weeks of opening. Keep tube tightly closed.
