Uses

This combination is indicated for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional colonic disorders characterized by abdominal pain, spasm, bloating, and altered bowel habits with an associated anxiety or psychosomatic component.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to either component, pheochromocytoma, prolactin-dependent tumors, pregnancy, severe renal impairment, and in patients with Parkinson's disease or other conditions where dopamine antagonism is harmful.

Side effects

Mebeverine may cause rare allergic reactions including urticaria and angioedema. Sulpiride may cause extrapyramidal symptoms, hyperprolactinemia, sedation, and tardive dyskinesia with prolonged use.

Warnings

Sulpiride may lower the seizure threshold; use with caution in epileptic patients. May prolong the QT interval; avoid in patients with known QT prolongation. Long-term use carries risk of tardive dyskinesia.

How it works

Mebeverine is a direct-acting antispasmodic that relaxes intestinal smooth muscle without anticholinergic effects. Sulpiride is a selective dopamine D2 receptor antagonist with anxiolytic and antiemetic properties, addressing the psychosomatic component of IBS.
