Uses

Ceftibuten is a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible organisms, including acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ceftibuten or other cephalosporins. Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy due to potential cross-reactivity.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions, including rash, urticaria, and anaphylaxis. Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea may occur with antibiotic use.

Warnings

Adjust dose in renal impairment. Use cautiously in patients with history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis. Prolonged therapy may result in superinfection with resistant organisms. Suspension should be stored correctly (refrigerated after reconstitution).

How it works

Ceftibuten inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis. It is highly stable against most beta-lactamases and is active against a range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. Oral bioavailability is approximately 75–90%.

Storage

Store the dry powder below 25°C. After reconstitution, refrigerate the suspension at 2–8°C and use within 14 days. Shake well before use.
