Uses

The combination of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate is indicated as an antacid for the temporary relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach associated with excess gastric acid. Calcium carbonate also serves as a calcium supplement for the prevention of hypocalcemia and osteoporosis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, severe renal impairment, or hypersensitivity to any component. Use with caution in patients with a history of kidney stones or renal insufficiency.

Side effects

Common side effects include constipation and belching from CO2 release. Magnesium carbonate may cause loose stools or diarrhea, which can partially offset calcium-induced constipation. High chronic doses of calcium can lead to hypercalcemia, milk-alkali syndrome, and nephrolithiasis.

Warnings

Antacid use for more than 2 weeks without medical advice is not recommended, as persistent symptoms may indicate a more serious condition. Calcium carbonate can interfere with the absorption of certain drugs (fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, thyroid hormones); separate doses by at least 2 hours.

How it works

Both calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are alkaline salts that neutralize gastric hydrochloric acid, raising intragastric pH and relieving acid-related symptoms. Calcium carbonate is also partially absorbed to supplement systemic calcium levels. Magnesium contributes laxative properties by osmotic action in the intestine.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C) in a dry place, away from excessive moisture and heat.
