Uses
Digestive enzyme preparation used to support digestion and relieve symptoms of digestive insufficiency such as bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and dyspepsia. Papain and pepsin aid in protein digestion; sanzyme provides additional enzymatic support.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the enzyme components, particularly papain. Avoid use in patients with active peptic ulceration.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause mild gastrointestinal effects such as nausea or diarrhea in some individuals. Allergic reactions are possible in persons sensitive to papaya-derived products.
Warnings
Use with caution in pregnant women. Sanzyme is a brand-specific enzyme blend; confirm ingredients on product labeling. Enzyme supplements do not replace treatment of underlying gastrointestinal disorders.
How it works
Papain is a cysteine protease derived from papaya that hydrolyzes proteins over a broad pH range. Pepsin is a gastric aspartyl protease that cleaves peptide bonds, particularly those involving aromatic amino acids. Together they enhance proteolytic digestion in the gastrointestinal tract.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep tightly closed.
