Uses

Topical local anesthetic used for temporary relief of pain and discomfort from toothache, minor dental procedures, sore gums, and minor oral mucosal irritation. Also used for minor skin irritations and sunburn.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in children under 2 years for teething pain without medical supervision. Should not be used for more than 7 days for oral conditions unless directed by a dentist or physician. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to benzocaine or ester-type local anesthetics.

Side effects

Potential serious adverse effect is methemoglobinemia, which reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Local reactions include irritation, stinging, and redness. Allergic contact dermatitis may occur.

Warnings

Methemoglobinemia warning: use may cause methemoglobinemia, a serious condition that must be treated promptly. Risk is higher in infants under 6 months, patients with G6PD deficiency, and those on certain medications. Seek immediate medical attention for bluish coloration of lips or fingernails, or difficulty breathing.

How it works

Benzocaine is an ester-type local anesthetic that reversibly blocks sodium ion channels in neuronal cell membranes, preventing the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses and producing loss of sensation in the applied area.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from heat and open flame. Keep out of reach of children.
