Uses
Azilsartan medoxomil is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in adults to lower blood pressure. Reducing blood pressure lowers the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction.
Do not use if
Do not coadminister with aliskiren-containing products in patients with diabetes. Contraindicated in pregnancy due to risk of fetal injury and death.
Side effects
The most common adverse reaction is diarrhea (approximately 2%). Other effects include dizziness, fatigue, and hypotension, particularly in volume-depleted patients.
Warnings
Discontinue immediately if pregnancy is detected; drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system can cause fetal harm. Monitor renal function and electrolytes in patients with renal impairment or on concurrent RAAS inhibitors.
How it works
Azilsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that selectively blocks the AT1 receptor subtype responsible for vasoconstriction, aldosterone release, and sodium retention. This results in vasodilation and reduced blood pressure without activating the renin-angiotensin system.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20–25°C); excursions permitted between 15–30°C. Store in original container, protected from light and moisture.
