Uses

Pefloxacin is a second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for treatment of serious bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gonorrhea, and certain gram-negative septicemias.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones. Not recommended in children, adolescents, or pregnant and breastfeeding women due to risk of arthropathy. Avoid in patients with history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolones.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, dizziness, and photosensitivity. Like all fluoroquinolones, it carries risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture, QT prolongation, and CNS effects. Hepatotoxicity has been reported.

Warnings

Risk of tendon rupture, including Achilles tendon, especially in elderly patients or those on corticosteroids. Discontinue immediately if tendinitis occurs. May exacerbate myasthenia gravis. Avoid prolonged sun exposure.

How it works

Pefloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and transcription. It has broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against gram-negative and many gram-positive organisms.

Store at room temperature below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light.
