Uses
An inhaled corticosteroid indicated as monotherapy (nasal spray) for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children. As part of a fixed-dose combination with a LABA (vilanterol), it is indicated for maintenance treatment of COPD and asthma in patients aged 5 years and older. Not indicated for relief of acute bronchospasm.
Do not use if
Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma or COPD requiring intensive measures. Severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins (inhaled formulation). Demonstrated hypersensitivity to fluticasone furoate or any excipient.
Side effects
Nasal: epistaxis, nasal irritation, headache, and throat irritation. Inhaled: oropharyngeal candidiasis, dysphonia, cough, and pneumonia (especially in COPD patients). Systemic corticosteroid effects (adrenal suppression, bone density reduction) may occur with prolonged high-dose use.
Warnings
Not for acute asthma or COPD exacerbations. Risk of pneumonia in COPD patients. Systemic effects possible with prolonged use (HPA axis suppression, glaucoma, cataracts). Use with caution in tuberculosis, untreated fungal infections, or herpes simplex of the eye. Rinse mouth after inhalation to prevent candidiasis.
How it works
Fluticasone furoate is a synthetic trifluorinated corticosteroid with high affinity and selectivity for the glucocorticoid receptor. It exerts potent local anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting inflammatory cell recruitment, reducing mediator release, and decreasing vascular permeability in the airways and nasal mucosa. It has minimal systemic bioavailability.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C. Protect from frost and direct heat or sunlight. Use within 2 months of opening.
