Uses

This proteolytic enzyme combination is used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-edema agent in post-traumatic and post-surgical swelling, sports injuries, and as adjunctive therapy in inflammatory conditions such as thrombophlebitis and sinusitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to bromelain, trypsin, rutin, or pineapple. Use with caution in patients on anticoagulant therapy as these enzymes may enhance antiplatelet effects.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated. May cause gastrointestinal upset, nausea, or diarrhea. Allergic reactions including skin rash are possible, particularly in patients with pineapple allergy (bromelain is derived from pineapple).

Warnings

Patients with clotting disorders or on anticoagulant therapy should consult a physician before use. Discontinue prior to surgical procedures. Not recommended in severe hepatic or renal impairment.

How it works

Bromelain and trypsin are proteolytic enzymes that degrade inflammatory mediators, fibrin, and immune complexes at sites of injury, reducing edema and accelerating tissue repair. Rutin (rutoside) is a flavonoid that stabilizes capillary walls, reduces vascular permeability, and has antioxidant properties.
