Uses
Used in the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and C), certain haematological malignancies (e.g., hairy cell leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia), and some solid tumors and viral infections.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to interferon alfa, severe decompensated hepatic disease, autoimmune hepatitis, or a history of severe psychiatric disorders.
Side effects
Common side effects include flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, myalgia, headache), leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, depression, and elevated liver enzymes. Neuropsychiatric effects can be severe.
Warnings
Monitor for severe neuropsychiatric events including depression and suicidal ideation. May cause or worsen autoimmune conditions, ischemic disorders, and infectious complications. Thyroid function should be monitored regularly.
How it works
Interferon alfa is an endogenous cytokine with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory properties. It binds to specific cell surface receptors activating signaling cascades that inhibit viral replication and modulate immune responses.
