Uses
Indicated to improve wakefulness in adults with excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, or shift work sleep disorder. It does not treat the underlying cause of sleep apnea.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to modafinil or armodafinil or any inactive ingredient in the formulation.
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, nausea, nervousness, insomnia, and dizziness. Serious but rare adverse effects include serious rash (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), angioedema, multi-organ hypersensitivity, and psychiatric disturbances.
Warnings
Discontinue immediately at first sign of rash. Monitor for psychiatric symptoms (anxiety, mania, psychosis). Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, hepatic impairment, or history of substance abuse. May reduce efficacy of hormonal contraceptives.
How it works
The precise mechanism of action is unknown. Modafinil has wake-promoting effects similar to sympathomimetic agents but with a distinct pharmacologic profile. It may involve inhibition of dopamine reuptake and activation of noradrenergic, serotonergic, and orexin pathways.
