Uses

A first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for serious infections caused by susceptible organisms, including respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, biliary tract, bone and joint, and septicemia. Also used for perioperative prophylaxis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics. Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy due to risk of cross-reactivity.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Allergic reactions ranging from rash to anaphylaxis may occur. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, thrombophlebitis at injection sites, and blood dyscrasias have been reported.

Warnings

Obtain full history of penicillin or cephalosporin hypersensitivity before initiating therapy. Discontinue immediately if severe allergic reaction occurs. Prolonged use may cause superinfection with non-susceptible organisms including Candida.

How it works

Cefazolin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. It is active primarily against gram-positive organisms and some gram-negative bacteria, with peak serum concentrations achieved within 1 hour of IM or IV administration.

Storage

Store dry powder vials at room temperature below 25°C. Reconstituted solutions should be refrigerated and used within the timeframe specified in the product labeling.
