Uses
This combination has been used as a bronchodilator in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive airway disorders. Its use is considered outdated in many settings.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to xanthines or barbiturates, porphyria, severe hepatic impairment, or a history of barbiturate dependence.
Side effects
May cause tachycardia, palpitations, nausea, headache, insomnia, irritability, sedation, dizziness, and dependence with prolonged phenobarbital exposure.
Warnings
Phenobarbital may impair alertness and carries a risk of dependence. Use cautiously in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular disease or significant drug interactions.
How it works
Acefylline piperazine is a xanthine derivative with bronchodilator activity. Phenobarbital is a barbiturate with central nervous system depressant effects.
