Uses

Carbetocin is a long-acting synthetic oxytocin analogue used to prevent uterine atony and excessive bleeding following caesarean section or vaginal delivery. It reduces the need for additional uterotonic agents.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to carbetocin or oxytocin, before delivery of the baby, in patients with serious cardiovascular disorders, and in hepatic or renal disease requiring caution.

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flushing, headache, tremor, and hypotension. Cardiovascular effects such as tachycardia may occur following intravenous administration.

Warnings

For use only after delivery of the infant. Monitor blood pressure and cardiovascular status closely. Not recommended for induction of labour. Use caution in patients with epilepsy or migraine.

How it works

Carbetocin binds to myometrial oxytocin receptors causing uterine contraction. Its longer half-life compared to oxytocin results in sustained uterotonic activity lasting 1–2 hours, reducing the risk of postpartum hemorrhage.

Store at 2–8°C (refrigerated). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
