Uses
Ulipristal acetate is a progesterone receptor modulator indicated as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or known contraceptive failure. It is effective when taken as soon as possible within 120 hours (5 days) of intercourse. It is not intended for routine use.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in known or suspected pregnancy. It is not intended to terminate an established pregnancy.
Side effects
The most common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, dysmenorrhea, fatigue, and dizziness. Menstrual cycle irregularities such as earlier or delayed menstruation may also occur.
Warnings
Women who become pregnant or develop lower abdominal pain after taking ulipristal acetate should be evaluated for ectopic pregnancy. Fertility returns rapidly after use. Concurrent use of hormonal contraceptives may reduce efficacy due to pharmacodynamic interaction.
How it works
Ulipristal acetate primarily acts by inhibiting or delaying ovulation, particularly when taken before the LH surge. It may also alter the endometrium in ways that could affect implantation. It binds with high affinity to the progesterone receptor, acting as a selective modulator.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C) in the original blister packaging, away from moisture and light.
