Uses
Sodium lactate intravenous solution is used as a source of water, electrolytes, and calories, and as an alkalinizing agent to correct mild to moderate metabolic acidosis. It is used in adults and pediatric patients requiring fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in neonates (28 days of age or younger) receiving concomitant ceftriaxone due to risk of fatal calcium-ceftriaxone salt precipitation. Contraindicated in patients with severe fluid overload or conditions where sodium or lactate load is harmful.
Side effects
Potential adverse effects include fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, hypersensitivity reactions, and air embolism with intravenous administration. Potassium imbalances may occur when combined with potassium-containing formulations.
Warnings
Deaths have occurred in neonates receiving ceftriaxone concomitantly with calcium-containing IV solutions. Monitor for signs of fluid overload, electrolyte disturbances, and hypersensitivity reactions during infusion.
How it works
Sodium is the principal extracellular cation, essential for controlling water distribution, fluid balance, and osmotic pressure. Lactate is metabolized in the liver to bicarbonate, producing an alkalinizing effect useful in correcting metabolic acidosis.
Storage
Store at room temperature in a single-dose container. Do not freeze. Inspect visually for particulate matter and discoloration before administration; discard if the solution is not clear.
