Uses
Used for the prevention and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia. Vitamin C enhances the absorption of non-haem iron from the gastrointestinal tract.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in haemochromatosis, haemosiderosis, and other iron-overload conditions. Do not use concurrently with parenteral iron preparations.
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, dark stools, and epigastric discomfort. These are dose dependent and may be reduced by taking with food.
Warnings
Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, contact a physician or poison control centre immediately.
How it works
Ferrous iron (Fe2+) is the preferred absorbed form; vitamin C (ascorbic acid) maintains iron in the reduced ferrous state and forms a chelate that enhances intestinal absorption, particularly in the presence of inhibitory dietary components.
