Uses

Indicated for the topical treatment of symptomatic inflammatory tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by Epidermophyton floccosum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton rubrum in patients 17 years and older. Clotrimazole provides antifungal activity and betamethasone reduces associated inflammation.

Do not use if

No absolute contraindications per the FDA label. However, avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to clotrimazole, betamethasone, or any excipient. Not recommended for diaper rash. Avoid use on the face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician.

Side effects

Most common adverse reactions include paresthesia, rash, edema, and secondary infections. Prolonged use of the corticosteroid component can lead to skin atrophy, striae, and HPA axis suppression. Reversible HPA axis suppression may occur, particularly under occlusion or over large surface areas.

Warnings

Risk of reversible HPA axis suppression with prolonged use, high-potency steroid, or occlusive dressings. Avoid use for longer than 2–4 weeks or on areas not covered by the indication. Do not use in children under 17 years. Not for ophthalmic use.

How it works

Clotrimazole is an azole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-dependent lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase, blocking ergosterol synthesis and disrupting cell membrane integrity. Betamethasone dipropionate is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid that inhibits inflammatory mediator release through glucocorticoid receptor activation.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F). Do not refrigerate or freeze.
