Uses

Natural progesterone used for luteal phase support in assisted reproduction, treatment of secondary amenorrhoea, threatened or recurrent miscarriage, and as part of hormone replacement therapy in women with an intact uterus.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, known or suspected hormone-dependent tumours, active thromboembolic disorders, severe hepatic impairment, and porphyria.

Side effects

Common side effects via injection include pain and local reactions at the injection site. Systemic effects include drowsiness, dizziness, breast tenderness, oedema, and mood changes. Vaginal discharge may occur with vaginal preparations.

Warnings

Monitor for signs of thromboembolic disease. Use caution in patients with a history of depression, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. Not recommended for use as a sole contraceptive method.

How it works

Progesterone is the endogenous progestational hormone secreted by the corpus luteum and placenta. It acts on nuclear progesterone receptors to prepare and maintain the endometrium for embryo implantation, inhibit uterine contractions, and support early pregnancy. The intramuscular route bypasses hepatic first-pass metabolism.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C), protected from light. Do not refrigerate the oily injection solution unless directed by the manufacturer.
