Uses
This intravenous lipid emulsion is indicated for parenteral nutrition in patients who cannot be adequately nourished by enteral route. It provides a balanced source of energy, essential fatty acids, and omega-3 fatty acids for critically ill and post-surgical patients.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with severe hyperlipidemia, severe hepatic insufficiency, severe coagulopathy, or known hypersensitivity to fish, egg, soybean, or peanut proteins.
Side effects
Possible adverse effects include hypertriglyceridemia, fat overload syndrome, thrombophlebitis at the infusion site, and hypersensitivity reactions. Elevated liver enzymes and cholestasis may occur with prolonged use.
Warnings
Monitor serum triglyceride levels during infusion. Infuse slowly and according to prescribed rate. Inspect emulsion for uniformity before administration; do not use if it appears to have separated. Renal and hepatic function should be monitored during prolonged therapy.
How it works
This mixed lipid emulsion provides medium-chain and long-chain triglycerides from soya bean oil, olive oil-derived monounsaturated fatty acids, and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil. Together they supply caloric energy and modulate inflammatory and immune responses.
Storage
Store refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Use immediately after opening; any unused portion must be discarded.
