Uses

Pirenoxine ophthalmic solution is used for the prevention and treatment of senile (age-related) cataracts. It is thought to prevent lens protein aggregation that leads to clouding of the lens.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pirenoxine or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

Local ocular side effects may include transient stinging, burning, or mild irritation upon instillation. Hypersensitivity reactions such as conjunctival hyperemia or allergic conjunctivitis are possible but uncommon.

Warnings

Pirenoxine eye drops should not be used while wearing soft contact lenses. Clinical evidence for its efficacy in halting cataract progression is limited; it does not reverse existing cataract opacity.

How it works

Pirenoxine is a quinoline derivative that competes with quinone substances for soluble lens proteins, thereby preventing the abnormal protein aggregation that contributes to cataract formation. It is applied topically as an ophthalmic solution.

Storage

Store at room temperature, protected from light and heat. Discard opened bottles within the period stated on the label.
