Uses
Used as an alkalinizing agent for metabolic acidosis and certain poisoning situations. Oral forms may also be used as antacids.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypochloremic alkalosis and certain conditions associated with excessive sodium retention.
Side effects
Metabolic alkalosis, hypernatremia, bloating, and fluid retention may occur with excessive use.
Warnings
Use cautiously in heart failure, renal impairment, and sodium-sensitive conditions.
