Uses
Bacterial lysates are used as immunomodulatory agents to reduce the frequency and severity of recurrent respiratory tract infections, particularly in patients prone to chronic bronchitis or recurrent upper and lower respiratory infections.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation. Use with caution in patients with autoimmune disease or active acute febrile illness.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Reported side effects include mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, and occasional hypersensitivity reactions including rash or urticaria.
Warnings
Should not be used as a substitute for antibiotics in acute bacterial infections. Efficacy data vary between products; use approved formulations with clinical evidence.
How it works
Bacterial lysates contain standardised extracts of bacterial cell wall components that stimulate innate and adaptive immune responses, increasing mucosal IgA production and enhancing macrophage and lymphocyte activity to improve respiratory mucosal immunity.
