Uses

Butamirate citrate is a centrally acting antitussive indicated for the symptomatic relief of non-productive (dry) cough in adults and children. It suppresses cough without causing respiratory depression or dependence.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to butamirate. Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Side effects

May cause mild adverse effects such as dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, and skin rash. These are generally transient and resolve on discontinuation.

Warnings

Avoid in patients who need to maintain productive cough (e.g., with excessive secretions). Use with caution during pregnancy (second and third trimesters) and lactation. Avoid concurrent use with other CNS depressants.

How it works

Butamirate citrate acts on the central nervous system to suppress the cough reflex without opioid-receptor mediation, thus avoiding dependence and respiratory depression. It also has mild bronchodilatory and expectorant properties.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C) away from moisture and light. Keep out of reach of children.
