Uses
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are used as dietary supplements to support cardiovascular health by reducing serum triglyceride levels. They are also used for general health maintenance, brain development support (particularly in children), and anti-inflammatory effects.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to fish or fish-derived products (for fish-oil-based formulations). Use with caution in patients with bleeding disorders or those receiving anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy.
Side effects
Common adverse effects include fishy aftertaste, belching, nausea, and loose stools. At high doses, omega-3 supplements may increase bleeding time and should be used with caution in patients on anticoagulant therapy.
Warnings
Patients on anticoagulant or antiplatelet therapy should consult their physician before use at high doses. Supplement quality and purity (contaminants such as mercury) vary; choose products with third-party certification. Not a substitute for a balanced diet.
How it works
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA — eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA — docosahexaenoic acid) reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis and increase triglyceride clearance. They are incorporated into cell membrane phospholipids, modulating inflammatory pathways by competing with arachidonic acid and generating less pro-inflammatory eicosanoids.
Storage
Store at room temperature or refrigerated. Protect from heat, light, and air oxidation. Refrigeration may extend shelf life after opening.
