Uses

Betamethasone valerate is a medium-to-potent topical corticosteroid indicated for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to betamethasone valerate or any component of the preparation. Not for use on the face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician.

Side effects

Local reactions including burning, itching, irritation, dryness, and folliculitis may occur. With prolonged use or occlusive dressings, skin atrophy, striae, hypopigmentation, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, and perioral dermatitis have been reported.

Warnings

Avoid prolonged use on large body surface areas. Systemic absorption can cause HPA axis suppression, especially in children. Do not use near eyes or on broken skin.

How it works

Topical corticosteroids exert anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects. They bind to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, modulating gene transcription to reduce the production of inflammatory mediators. Betamethasone valerate is classified as a potent corticosteroid (Class II–III).

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature 20°C–25°C (68°F–77°F). Keep away from heat and flame.
