Uses

Alclometasone dipropionate 0.05% ointment is a low-to-medium potency topical corticosteroid indicated for relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. It may be used in children aged 1 year and older, though safety beyond 3 weeks has not been established in pediatric patients.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to alclometasone dipropionate or any component of the formulation. Not established for use in children under 1 year of age.

Side effects

The most commonly reported local reactions include itching, burning, and erythema, occurring in approximately 1% of patients. Other topical corticosteroid reactions such as skin atrophy, striae, folliculitis, and perioral dermatitis may occur, particularly with occlusive dressings or prolonged use.

Warnings

Avoid use on the face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician. Prolonged use or use under occlusion can lead to systemic absorption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, and manifestations of Cushing's syndrome. Use with caution in pediatric patients due to greater skin surface area to body mass ratio.

How it works

Alclometasone dipropionate exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects typical of topical corticosteroids. It is believed to act by inducing phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins), thereby reducing the synthesis of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F) as per USP Controlled Room Temperature guidelines.
