Uses

Polidocanol is a sclerosing agent used for the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins (telangiectasias). It is indicated for incompetent great saphenous veins, accessory saphenous veins, and visible varicosities of the great saphenous vein system. It improves symptoms of superficial venous incompetence and the appearance of visible varicosities.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to polidocanol, acute thromboembolic disease, or severe systemic disease. Do not inject intra-arterially.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include pain or discomfort at the injection site, injection site thrombosis (retained coagulum), hematoma, superficial thrombophlebitis, and extravasation. Serious reactions include anaphylaxis, tissue ischemia and necrosis if injected intra-arterially, and venous thrombosis.

Warnings

Be prepared to manage anaphylaxis. Avoid intra-arterial injection as it may cause tissue ischemia and necrosis. Risk of venous thrombosis including deep vein thrombosis; monitor for signs of thromboembolic complications.

How it works

Polidocanol (hydroxypolyethoxydodecane) is a non-ionic detergent and local anesthetic that scleroses vein endothelium by disrupting the endothelial cell membrane, leading to intravascular thrombosis and fibrotic occlusion of the treated vessel.

Storage

Store at or below 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Do not shake containers.
