Uses

Sevelamer is a phosphate binder indicated for the control of serum phosphorus in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with bowel obstruction and in those with known hypersensitivity to sevelamer hydrochloride or any excipients.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, flatulence, and constipation. Serious gastrointestinal events such as bowel obstruction, ulceration, and perforation have been reported rarely.

Warnings

Serious gastrointestinal adverse events including dysphagia, bowel obstruction, bleeding ulcers, colitis, and perforation have been reported and may require hospitalisation or surgery. Monitor for these complications during therapy.

How it works

Sevelamer is a non-absorbed, cross-linked polymeric phosphate binder. Its multiple protonated amines bind phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract through ionic and hydrogen bonding, reducing dietary phosphate absorption and lowering serum phosphorus levels.

Store at room temperature (20–25°C). Protect from moisture.
