Uses
Fucidic acid is a topical antibiotic indicated for skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains. It is used in wound dressings for infected wounds, burns, and surgical wounds.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to fucidic acid or any excipient in the formulation.
Side effects
Topical application may cause local skin reactions such as erythema, pruritus, burning, or contact dermatitis. Hypersensitivity reactions are uncommon.
Warnings
Prolonged use should be avoided to minimize the risk of resistance development. Not for use in or near the eyes without specific ophthalmic formulation. Systemically, fucidic acid can cause hepatotoxicity; topical use carries minimal systemic absorption.
How it works
Fucidic acid is a steroidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by blocking elongation factor G (EF-G)-dependent translocation of the ribosome. It is primarily bacteriostatic but may be bactericidal at high concentrations.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Keep in original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
