Uses

This combination of a topical corticosteroid (flumethasone) and a keratolytic agent (salicylic acid) is used for inflammatory skin conditions associated with hyperkeratosis, such as psoriasis, eczema with scaling, and seborrheic dermatitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated on infected skin, viral infections (herpes, varicella), perianal and genital areas in children, and in patients with hypersensitivity to any component. Avoid use on the face for extended periods.

Side effects

Local side effects include skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, and contact dermatitis with prolonged use. Systemic absorption of flumethasone can occur, especially under occlusion, leading to adrenal suppression. Salicylic acid may cause local irritation.

Warnings

Avoid prolonged use, especially in children, pregnant women, and on facial skin. Do not apply over large body surface areas. Monitor for signs of systemic corticosteroid absorption.

How it works

Flumethasone is a halogenated corticosteroid that suppresses inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2 and reducing production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Salicylic acid softens and dissolves the intercellular cement of the stratum corneum, facilitating desquamation and enhancing corticosteroid penetration.
