Uses
Used as a first-aid antiseptic to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. Also used for preoperative skin preparation and wound care.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to povidone-iodine or iodine. Avoid use in the eyes or over large areas of the body. Use with caution in neonates, pregnant women, and patients with thyroid disease.
Side effects
Local skin irritation, redness, or rash may occur. Prolonged or large-area use may lead to systemic iodine absorption causing thyroid dysfunction. Discontinue if the condition worsens or fails to improve within one week.
Warnings
For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, ears, and mucous membranes unless using a formulation specifically intended for those areas. Do not use over large skin surfaces for prolonged periods without medical supervision. Store at 25°C; do not freeze.
How it works
Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone and elemental iodine. It exerts its bactericidal effect through the release of free iodine, which oxidizes microbial proteins and nucleic acids, disrupting cellular function.
Storage
Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F). Do not freeze.
