Uses

Oral rehydration salts (ORS) are used for the prevention and treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. Suitable for all age groups including infants.

Do not use if

Intestinal obstruction, intractable vomiting, severe malabsorption syndromes, or conditions requiring intravenous rehydration. Severe dehydration with hemodynamic compromise.

Side effects

Generally very safe. Nausea and vomiting may occur if consumed too rapidly. Hypernatremia may develop if consumed in excess without free water in patients with impaired renal function.

Warnings

Severe dehydration or shock requires intravenous rehydration; ORS alone is insufficient. Monitor intake and output in vulnerable patients (infants, elderly).

How it works

ORS contains glucose, sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate (or citrate) in proportions that exploit the sodium-glucose co-transporter (SGLT1) in the small intestinal mucosa to drive sodium and water absorption even during active secretory diarrhea, restoring fluid and electrolyte balance.

Storage

Store sachets in a cool, dry place. Prepare the solution freshly before use and discard any unused portion within 24 hours if stored in a refrigerator.
