Uses

Used in ophthalmic formulations to relieve redness of the eye due to minor eye irritations, and as a lubricant to prevent further irritation or relieve dryness of the eye.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to tetrahydrozoline or any product component.

Side effects

May cause transient stinging, burning, or blurred vision upon instillation. Rebound redness may occur with prolonged use. Systemic absorption may cause increased heart rate or elevated blood pressure if used excessively.

Warnings

For ophthalmic use only. Do not use if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. Discontinue and consult a physician if eye pain, vision changes, or persistent redness occur, or if condition does not improve within 72 hours. Avoid use in children under 6 years without medical advice. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface.

How it works

Tetrahydrozoline is an imidazoline derivative with alpha-adrenergic agonist activity. It acts on alpha-1 and alpha-2 receptors in ocular blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction and thereby reducing redness. Its onset of action is rapid and duration is typically 4–8 hours.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use if solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
