Uses

Indicated for schizophrenia, manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, bipolar depression, and as adjunctive therapy for major depressive disorder in adults.

Do not use if

Known hypersensitivity to cariprazine or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include akathisia, extrapyramidal symptoms, insomnia, nausea, and restlessness.

Warnings

Antipsychotics increase mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. Monitor for suicidal thoughts, metabolic changes, and movement disorders.

How it works

Acts mainly as a partial agonist at dopamine D2/D3 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors with antagonist activity at 5-HT2A receptors.
