Uses

Polidocanol (also known as lauromacrogol) is a sclerosing agent used for the treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, and hemorrhoids. In higher concentrations it is used for larger varicosities; in lower concentrations for telangiectasias and reticular veins.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in allergy to polidocanol/lauromacrogol, acute thromboembolic disease, severe local or systemic infection, and immobility. Intra-arterial injection is absolutely contraindicated.

Side effects

Similar to polidocanol: injection site pain, hematoma, superficial thrombophlebitis, hyperpigmentation, matting, and rarely anaphylaxis. Tissue necrosis may occur with extravasation or intra-arterial injection.

Warnings

Ensure intravenous placement before injection. Have resuscitation equipment available. Avoid use in patients with severe cardiovascular disease or during pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks.

How it works

Lauromacrogol (polidocanol) is a non-ionic surfactant that damages endothelial cells of veins by interfering with cell surface lipids, leading to endothelial destruction, thrombosis, and subsequent fibrotic occlusion of the vessel. It also has local anesthetic properties reducing injection-related pain.
