Uses
Used as a nutritional supplement to support iron absorption and immune function. Lactoferrin chelates iron and has antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Vitamin C enhances non-heme iron absorption and acts as an antioxidant, supporting overall iron status in iron-deficiency states.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to lactoferrin (bovine) or ascorbic acid. Use with caution in patients with iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. High doses of lactoferrin may cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Vitamin C in high doses may cause diarrhea, nausea, or gastrointestinal upset. Kidney stone formation is a risk with very high vitamin C supplementation.
Warnings
Patients with hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders should consult a physician before use. Bovine lactoferrin may be unsuitable for individuals with dairy protein allergy.
How it works
Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein that binds ferric iron with high affinity, modulating iron availability for pathogens and supporting mucosal immunity. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reduces ferric iron to the more absorbable ferrous form and donates electrons to free radical scavenging pathways.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–25°C) in a cool, dry place. Protect from heat, light, and moisture.
