Uses

Indicated for inflammatory skin conditions complicated by or at risk of bacterial infection, including eczema, contact dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Betamethasone is a potent topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, while neomycin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, viral skin infections (including herpes simplex, chickenpox), untreated bacterial or fungal infections, and hypersensitivity to any component. Avoid use in the ear if perforation is suspected.

Side effects

Local effects include skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, and burning. Prolonged use may lead to HPA axis suppression. Neomycin sensitization leading to contact dermatitis is common. Risk of superinfection with non-susceptible organisms exists.

Warnings

Avoid prolonged use, use on the face, or use under occlusion without medical supervision. Do not use near the eyes. Children are more susceptible to systemic absorption and HPA axis suppression. Sensitization to neomycin may occur — discontinue if allergic reaction develops.

How it works

Betamethasone is a synthetic fluorinated glucocorticoid that binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators. Neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, active against gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positives.

Storage

Store below 25°C, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
